Obituary of David William Vokes

David William Vokes

Passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by his family on May 19, 2024 in Bowmanville, Ontario in his 85th year.

David was born on March 3, 1940, in South Porcupine, Ontario the second son of Russell David and Mildred May Vokes (nee Hutchinson).

He first attended Golden Avenue Public School, where in Grade 2 he would meet his future wife Anna-Liisa (Oja) – they later became high school sweethearts and would marry in 1961.  In 1958 after graduating from South Porcupine High School, he obtained his teacher’s certificate and began his teaching career in Ahmic Harbour, followed by Whitney Public School in Toronto.

In 1966, David and Anna relocated to Smooth Rock Falls, Ontario where he was first a primary school teacher, then later Vice-Principal and finally Principal. They were both active curlers, enjoyed cross-country skiing and card nights with close friends.

Upon retirement in 1993, David and Anna first moved to London, Ontario then relocated to Bowmanville in 1997. He enjoyed volunteering with Clarington Community Care, primarily with the Meals on Wheels program.  David also enjoyed gardening and baking – with many requests for his chocolate brownies.  David and Anna experienced many travel adventures together, including a total of 40 cruises that saw them visit six continents and countless countries. They have always been active grandparents with their three beloved grandchildren.

David is survived by his loving wife Anna, children Lynne (Marcel), Geoffrey and Hilary (Jim), along with grandchildren Annika (Matt), Erik (Amber) and Elise (Chase).  He is predeceased by his brother Jim and his parents.

Donations in memoriam can be made to the Odette Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook Hospital or Marigold Hospice, both charities were close to David’s heart following his battle with cancer.  The family also wishes to extend their sincere thanks to his care team of Dr. Kassel, Dr. Shim, Dr. Broomfield and Dr. Soares, as well as the ParaMed team led by Goldie, all of whom provided fantastic support and end of life care.
