Obituary of Anna Marie Strike

Anna Marie Strike

On June 1, 2022, Anna Marie Strike of Bowmanville passed away peacefully and comfortably at the age of 94. Anna was born and raised as an Orono farm girl during the depression who went on to graduate from the University of Toronto where she exceled at sports and played on the girl’s varsity hockey team. It is there that she met the love of her life, Alan Strike. The two of them settled and raised three boys in Alan’s home town of Bowmanville, Ontario. Her kind and generous nature quickly manifested into a life long passion to improve the lives of others within the local community. Always one to say “can do” to any one or organization in need, Anna offered her participation on numerous community improvement initiatives and took particular interest in the local hospital. From manning the gift shop to any and all fund raising initiatives, Anna went on to chair the Hospital Foundation for several years. For her life long devotion to community service, Anna was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medallion. Despite all of these time commitments, she still placed family above all else and made a point of supporting all of her sons activities. Many a night Anna could be seen in the stands on the northeast side of the old Bowmanville arena taking in one of her son’s games. For over 50 years, she was the matron of the Beech Street ice palace and on any given night would always answer the door bell to “turn on the rink lights” for generations of kids. The family “camp” in Algonquin Park was her special place. She made a point of getting there every year from her initial visit (honeymoon) through to her 92nd year. Not all, but many guests were recognized as “Gonk worthy” by Anna through her many years in the Park.

Anna was pre-deceased by her husband Alan, brother Don (Staples) and sister Carol (Wiggans). She will be sorely missed by her 3 boys Ron (Allison), Bob (Alison), Dan (Cindy), grandchildren Ross, Mere, Jackson, Sam, Hannah, Hillary and many nieces and nephews. Many thanks to the staff and residents at Seasons retirement home in Bowmanville for making Anna’s final years comfortable. A very special thanks to Leeann Dochuk, for her unwavering care and companionship with Anna before and during the COVID pandemic.
