Obituary of Lawrence Derk Hellinga

Lournes [Lawrence] Derk Hellinga, 92, of Oshawa, ON, passed away on Dec 6, 2020 in Thorntonview LTC. Lawrence was born in Groningen, Netherlands to Roel & Martje Hellinga on June 20, 1928. He went to elementary school in the Netherlands and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1953. He worked for many years at the Toronto Star while raising a family in Willowdale, then moved the family to Bowmanville as the proprietor of Flowers by Jackman. In retirement, he enjoyed organizing bus trips for seniors. Lawrence is survived by his wife Dorothy (VanDyken), siblings Zwantje [Netty] VanderBoor (Reinder, deceased), Antje [Anne] Visser (Sytze [Sid] deceased), Tjeerd [Charles] (Dorothy), children Roy (Nynke Kramer), Doug (Audrey), Jerry (Rainy) and Cindy (Vince Gibbs), and grandchildren Victoria (Alexander Wozonek), Steven, Branden, Dylan, Keaton, Alex, Kurt, and Dani . He is preceded in death by his parents Roel & Martje, siblings Romke (Lena deceased), Janke Willemsma (Albert deceased), Trientje[Trix] Oostdyk (Leo), and grandson Ernest Gibbs Memorial donations may be made to Gate 3:16, 47 Simcoe St S, PO Box 218, Oshawa, ON L1H 7L1 or gate316.org The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at Thorntonview LTC and Carriage House for their care over the past few years of his life. Burial will be at Bowmanville Cemetery followed by a private Funeral service at Northcutt & Elliott Funeral Home on Dec. 9, 2020 at 2pm with Reverend John Wildeboor of Rehoboth Christian Reformed Church officiating.
