Dear friends, acquaintances, neighbours, extended family, Hydro colleagues, caregivers, retirees, ex-boyfriends, in-laws, outlaws, bikers and the gang from Mexico:
We want to express our heartfelt thanks for joining us yesterday to send Doug off with happy thoughts. As we continue the journey on what feels like a ship that has lost its rudder, we feel embraced by many communities, both longstanding and newer to us. We are deeply touched by the warmth associated with your memories of our husband, father, and grandfather.
Thank you.

We were so sorry to hear of Doug's passing. How truly fortunate we were to have Doug and Dorothy as our backyard neighbours over the past 25 years. No fences needed. Enjoyed all the wonderful gardening advice from Doug. Although I am sure he chuckled at our little 10 foot plot. Memories of sharing stories of the kids over the years and then the grandchildren. He was so proud to tell me what they were all doing. He loved to chat with our children when they played out in the yard and never to busy to stop and show them something in the garden or give them some berries . We enjoyed visits into our yard from the little dogs and what a view we were privileged to have of a wonderful garden . Rows of raspberries as a yard border and tulips and the birds to view each spring. We miss seeing him out there every morning working in the yard.

We were saddened to hear about Doug’s passing. He was a wonderful man. Jim enjoyed working with Doug at Hydro One over the years. My girls (when they were young) & I enjoyed our times at the Hartford’s backyard pool. We will be honoured to come to the celebration of life on Saturday to hear more great stories and see special photos of a man that touched many people. Jim and Melody Wood

We had many great years with Doug & Dorothy at Condomar Arrecife in Chicxulub, Mexico. He helped make condo life there a lot of fun. It was always great to play crib with him and enjoy his company and his “campechanos” (among the best around) at the Bar Palapa. It was a privilege to know him over so many winters.
Adios amigo!

We will always remember Doug with infectious love of life. He was always lending a hand to family and friends, be it in Toronto, Bowmanville, cottages and in Mexico. Doug had to always be on the move and couldn't sit still and that "infected" all those around him. His vegetable garden produced the biggest and best tasting vegetables, ever. I remember staying at their home in Bowmanville while working in the area. Doug was already up early every morning with his boots shined ready at the door and a large cooked breakfast for the two of us. He was always upbeat and had all around him laughing and singing (including his singing dog, Max!!) He was a great story teller and at my parents 50th wedding anniversary, he had everyone laughing so hard.
During the past few years Doug visited my mother in her retirement home and took her out for lunch. These visits were her highlights.

What beautiful words about the life of an outstanding man. Sending our love, thoughts and condolences to you all. Saunders Avenue will not be the same...It was clear that Doug was a special force of energy that always showed kindness. We will miss seeing what projects him and Chuck would have gotten upto this summer- Doug, shirtless and wearing his straw hat- with the best tan around!! Rest In Peace, pal...

I first met Doug when he and Dorothy joined the Beech Street Spinners Bicycle Club. Doug had one of those smiles that always made you feel good you met him. He was always there to help out or lend a hand or bring you some tomatoes or tulip bulbs from his wonderful garden. When our bike club became the Clarington Bicycle Club, you could always count on Doug to help out at our social BBQ’s. Doug, we miss you and we love you and save a spot for us on the bike trail.
