Obituary of Henry Haass

Henry Haass

June 24, 1932 – November 18, 2023

Henry left us November 18, 2023 after several months of declining health.

His parents were Herman & Louise Haass.  He is survived by his wife, the former Betty Glendinning, his son John (Petra), his daughter Marilyn (George Muizelaar) and his daughter Margaret.  He is survived by grandchildren, Heather Haass (Monty), Dustin Haass, Nick Haass (Caitlyn), Traci Louws (Jeremy), Shaelyn Muizelaar (Nic), Adele & Jesse Muizelaar as well as 4 great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by brothers Herman & Edward & predeceased by Walter.

At 16 (1948) Henry started his electrical apprenticeship with Hill Cornish Electric in Oshawa.  He became a journeyman electrician 4 years later & worked there till in the winter of 1957 when there wasn’t enough work so he applied to General Motors as a tradesman.

In 1953 he met the love of his life Betty.  In 1955 he started to build their house on a lot given to him by his parents across the road from their farm on Taunton Road.  On June 23, 1956 he married Betty.

Henry worked at GM for several years on the tools & then rose to become first a group leader and then a maintenance foreman.  He retired at 54 with 30 years service.  GM was very good to our family and provided us a good livelihood.

In retirement Henry worked for several years as an electrician for many neighbours.

Betty & Henry built a cottage for themselves on Cameron Lake starting in 1972, finishing it in 1980.  We enjoyed every summer there, special Thanksgivings & a weeks holiday every year after Christmas.

Henry joined the Sydenham Kiwanis in 1987 and enjoyed many years of fellowship with this group.  Henry & Betty were members of Zion United Church for many years but changed to St. Andrews in Bowmanville later.  We made many good friends in both congregations & thank God for all the many good life messages we received there.

After the kids left home Betty & Henry travelled all over the world – all 10 provinces, half the US, most European countries, China, Russia and Egypt…We still think Canada is the best country!

Visitation will be held at NORTHCUTT ELLIOTT FUNERAL HOME, 53 Division St. N. Bowmanville on Tuesday November 21st from 2 – 4 & 6 – 8 pm.  A Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Wednesday November 22nd at 1:30 pm.  Cremation to follow with interment at Zion Cemetery.  Memorial Donations may be made to a Charity of your Choice.
