Obituary of Donald F. Brooks

July 5, 1926- June 28, 2013 After a short battle with cancer, we are sorry to say that Don has passed away. Don’s childhood was spent growing up on a farm in Saskatchewan with his parents, three brothers and four sisters. The impact of the Dirty Thirties made it necessary for the Brooks family to move to Bowmanville. When Don was discharged from the Canadian Army, he found employment at the Goodyear Tire plant where he remained until his retirement. In 1951, he met Shirley Tanner, the love of his life, at a dance. They eventually married and had two children, Rob & Janice. He was a member of the Bowmanville Legion where he eventually became the Pipe Major of the band. He enjoyed teaching the pipes to all ages for many years. Don’s love for hunting and fishing resulted in many interesting tales. He always enjoyed a good game of cards and was known to be a gracious winner. The Brooks family would like to thank the nursing staff at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville for the exceptional care Don received while a patient. He frequently remarked how marvelous they were to him. A Private Family Gathering to Celebrate Don’s life will be held. Memorial Donations may be made to Bowmanville Memorial Hospital Foundation or The Cancer Society through the NORTHCUTT ELLIOTT FUNERAL HOME, 53 Division St. N. with whom the arrangements have been entrusted. “Don, Dad, Grandpa, Grampy, Uncle Don will be greatly missed.” “Don, Dad, Grandpa, Grampy, Uncle Don will be greatly missed.”
