Her great grandparents came to Newfoundland from Scotland. Her parents, Maggie and Capt. Peter Blackwood, resided in Brookfield, Bonavista Bay where she spent her childhood years. Three life lessons she shared were:
- “Never leave home without your lipstick on, ladies! “
- “Ice cream is the best treat!”
- “As long as you can laugh, life is worth living! “
